Guide · Health and Social Care Northern Ireland

    HSCNI jobs,
    explained.

Health and social care are delivered together in Northern Ireland, which makes the recruitment process here different from the rest of the UK. This guide covers who the employers are, how the HSC application form is scored, what vetting involves, and how agency work fits alongside a permanent application.

    The employers

    Six trusts, one system.

HSCNI is the integrated health and social care system for Northern Ireland. Five geographic trusts and the ambulance service employ the majority of clinical, care and support staff, alongside independent care homes, domiciliary providers and supported living services that work to the same standards.

    1. 01

Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

Belfast City, Royal Victoria, Mater and Musgrave Park hospitals plus community services across the city.

    2. 02

Northern Health and Social Care Trust

Antrim Area and Causeway hospitals, with community teams across Antrim, Ballymena, Coleraine, Larne, Magherafelt and Newtownabbey.

    3. 03

South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust

Ulster, Downe and Lagan Valley hospitals, covering North Down, Ards, Lisburn and Down.

    4. 04

Southern Health and Social Care Trust

Craigavon Area and Daisy Hill hospitals, covering Armagh, Banbridge, Newry, Dungannon and Portadown.

    5. 05

Western Health and Social Care Trust

Altnagelvin and South West Acute hospitals, covering Derry/Londonderry, Strabane, Omagh, Enniskillen and Limavady.

    6. 06

      Northern Ireland Ambulance Service

A region-wide trust recruiting paramedics, emergency medical technicians, call handlers and support staff.

    The process

    From advert to first shift.

    1. 01Find the vacancy

HSC trust vacancies are advertised centrally through the HSC Recruitment portal rather than on each hospital's own site. Set up a candidate account, save searches by band, trust and job family, and turn on alerts so you see roles the day they open. Closing dates are firm and late applications are not accepted.

    2. 02Read the job description and personnel specification

The personnel specification is the document that decides whether you are shortlisted. Every essential criterion is scored, so treat it as a checklist. If a criterion asks for a set number of months of experience in a named setting, state the setting, the dates and the duties in your own words.

    3. 03Complete the application form properly

HSC applications are form based, not CV based. Shortlisting panels only score what is written in the form, so never write 'see CV' or assume a panel will infer experience from a job title. Give a separate, specific example for each criterion and keep to the word limits.

    4. 04Shortlisting and interview

Interviews are usually competency based and marked against the same specification. Prepare examples using a simple structure: the situation, what you did, and the outcome. Bring examples covering safeguarding, working under pressure, communication with families and escalating concerns.

    5. 05Pre-employment checks

A conditional offer is followed by checks: identity and right to work, an AccessNI enhanced disclosure, occupational health clearance, references covering your recent employment history, and professional registration where the role requires it.

    6. 06Registration and induction

Nurses and midwives need NMC registration; social care staff and social workers need NISCC registration. Mandatory training such as moving and handling, adult and child safeguarding, infection prevention and basic life support is completed before or during induction.

    Vetting and registration

What you will be asked for.

    AccessNI enhanced disclosure
Health and social care roles involve regulated activity, so an enhanced check is standard. Give a complete five year address history and disclose anything on your record: a disclosure is assessed on relevance, not automatically refused.
    NISCC registration
Care workers in domiciliary, residential and day care settings must be NISCC registered, and registration must be kept current with annual fees and post registration training and learning.
    NMC registration
Registered nurses and midwives need a current NMC PIN and revalidation every three years.
    Occupational health
A health questionnaire and, where relevant, immunisation checks. Declaring a condition is not a barrier; it allows reasonable adjustments to be put in place.
    References
Usually covering recent employment, with any gaps explained. Line up referees before you apply so an offer is not held up.

    Where Rutledge fits

    Agency work alongside your application.

Rutledge is not part of HSCNI and we do not run trust recruitment. What we do is place registered nurses, healthcare assistants and support workers into trust, private hospital, care home and community settings across Northern Ireland, and deliver domiciliary care in the Northern and Southern Trust areas.

For many people that is the practical route in. Trust competitions can take weeks, while agency shifts start sooner, pay while you wait, and build the dated, setting specific experience that a personnel specification asks you to evidence. Our compliance team facilitates AccessNI enhanced disclosure, manages NISCC renewals in house, and delivers mandatory training free of charge, so you keep the same documentation a trust will ask to see.

    Questions

    HSCNI recruitment FAQs.

    What is HSCNI?
Health and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSCNI) is the system that delivers health and social care in Northern Ireland. Unlike the rest of the UK, health and social care are integrated here, and services are delivered by five geographic trusts plus the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
    Where are HSCNI jobs advertised?
Health and social care trust vacancies are advertised through the central HSC Recruitment portal. Roles are listed by trust, job family and Agenda for Change band, and applications are made on an online form against a personnel specification.
Do I need NISCC registration before I apply?
Not always. For many care roles you can apply first and register once an offer is made, but being registered already makes you available sooner. Rutledge manages NISCC renewals in house for workers on our books.
How long does HSC recruitment take?
It varies by trust and role. Shortlisting, interview and pre-employment checks commonly take several weeks, and an AccessNI enhanced disclosure can add further time. Agency work is a practical way to keep earning and build trust experience while a permanent application progresses.
Can agency experience help me get a permanent HSC job?
Yes. Agency shifts in trust and independent settings build the specific, dated examples that HSC personnel specifications ask for, and give you references from the type of setting you want to work in permanently.
Does Rutledge place staff into health and social care trusts?
Yes. Our healthcare desk places registered nurses, healthcare assistants and support workers into trust, private hospital, care home and community settings across Northern Ireland, with NISCC registration, AccessNI enhanced disclosure and mandatory training in place before a first shift.
