Temporary staff are the fastest way to protect output when something changes: a resignation, a sickness run, a seasonal peak, or a contract won at short notice. Used properly, they also give you a low risk route into permanent hiring.
When temporary is the right answer
- Cover. Sickness, maternity, holidays and notice periods.
- Peaks. Seasonal production, stock takes, harvest, contract mobilisation.
- Uncertainty. Work you expect to continue but cannot yet commit to permanently.
- Trial before permanent. A temp to perm assignment shows you how someone actually works before you make an offer.
How quickly you can get someone
Realistically it depends on the role and the town. General operative, warehouse, cleaning and care roles can often be covered within a day or two where there is an existing local pool. Skilled trades, technical and regulated roles take longer because vetting cannot be shortened, particularly where AccessNI or NISCC registration is required.
The single biggest factor in speed is the quality of the brief. Shift pattern, exact site address, pay rate, PPE, parking and who the worker reports to on arrival. Vague briefs cause no shows.
What the agency handles
- Sourcing, screening and right to work verification
- Contracts of employment for the worker, and payroll each week
- Holiday pay, National Insurance and pension auto-enrolment
- Employer's liability insurance for the assignment
- Replacement cover when someone is unwell
What stays with you
You remain responsible for day to day health and safety on your site: induction, site specific risk, supervision, PPE provision where agreed, and reporting any incident. Agency Workers Regulations also mean that after a qualifying period a temporary worker becomes entitled to equal basic working and employment conditions to a comparable direct employee. Plan for that rather than being surprised by it.
Getting the best out of temporary staff
- Induct them properly, the same as any new starter.
- Give them a named person on site to ask questions of.
- Tell the agency quickly if performance is not right, early feedback gets it fixed.
- Confirm end dates, extensions and any intention to go permanent in good time.
