This week’s success story features Strabane man, Eamon Cooke and his journey through the Training for Success programme to full-time employment.
When I left school at the age of 16, I had no immediate career plans. I applied for numerous positions but had no success. I visited several training agencies but I could not find a course that appealed to me. I then decided to pay a visit to Rutledge in Strabane and after a chat with the branch manager Monica; I decided to enrol for an NVQ Level 2 in IT.
The course itself involved both practical and theory based elements; providing me with the technical skills and knowledge necessary for working in the IT industry. During my time at Rutledge, the tutors prepared me for job interviews and provided me with guidance on how to develop my CV to a high standard. The NVQ consisted of 4 days placement and 1 day training at Rutledge, my placement was with the Civil Service.
On completion of my NVQ I was hired by Northbrook Technology, which has since been renamed to Allstate. I worked there for 18 months until I joined the Civil Service on a full time basis as an Administrative Assistant. Within 3 years of working in the Civil Service, I was promoted to Administrative Officer.
The guidance I received and the qualification I earned during my time at Rutledge has been fundamental to the success I’ve had in my IT career. I believe that without the help and guidance I received during my time at Rutledge, I would not be in the position I am in today.
